Frequently Asked Questions

5-Day Kilimanjaro Climb
1. How difficult is the 5-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route?

Although considered one of the more accessible routes, the 5-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route carries significant risks of altitude sickness because the body has less time to adjust.

However, like any high-altitude trek, it’s important to take proper precautions, including acclimatization, staying hydrated, and listening to your body.

The 5-day Marangu Route hike has a short acclimatization period and because of this, it offers a lower summit success rate than the 6-day route’s success rate.

It’s important to ascend slowly to increase your chances of success.

Pack warm clothing, waterproof gear, strong hiking boots, and other necessary goods. The essential packing list includes:

  • Layered clothes (base layers, insulation, and waterproof outerwear), good trekking boots, warm socks, gloves, a cap, and a headlamp.
  • A warm sleeping bag (ideally rated at -10°C or below).
  • Trekking poles: to help in balance, especially on the descent.
  • Hydration system: Water bottles or bladders.
  • Personal goods include sunscreen, sunglasses, a camera, and a first-aid kit.

A 5-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route is best done during the dry seasons, which run from January to February and July to September. These months provide clear sky, consistent weather, and temperate, enhancing your chances of a successful summit attempt.
